Tips for the Most Common Trees in the Mid West

Illinois is home to many beautiful tree species that provide shade, improve property values, and support local wildlife. Like any living landscape feature, trees require seasonal care to remain healthy, especially during the hot summer months.

Here are a few of the most common trees we see throughout Kane County and how homeowners can help them thrive.

Tree Disease Assessment

Oak Trees

Oak trees are among the most valuable shade trees in Illinois. During summer, avoid unnecessary pruning unless removing hazardous branches, and monitor for signs of Oak Wilt or drought stress.

Maple Trees

Maples benefit from consistent watering during extended dry periods. Watch for leaf scorch, dead branches, and fungal diseases that may appear during humid weather.

Ash Trees

Although Emerald Ash Borer has devastated many ash populations, treated ash trees should continue receiving regular inspections and preventative care to maintain their health.

Honey Locust

Honey Locust trees grow quickly but benefit from structural pruning to reduce weak branch attachments and improve long-term stability.

Pine and Spruce Trees

Evergreens should be monitored for needle discoloration, insect damage, and fungal diseases during warm, humid weather. Maintaining healthy soil conditions helps improve their overall vigor.

Ornamental Flowering Trees

Crabapple, Serviceberry, and other ornamental species require routine monitoring for fungal diseases such as Apple Scab, as well as proper pruning to maintain attractive growth. We offer Apple Scab Treatments as a part of our Plant Healthcare Services. Read our Apple Scab Awareness and Prevention Guide
